Professional Statement
Dr Edsell is consultant in Anaesthesia and critical care Medicine with an interest in cardiovascular and thoracic anaesthesia. Dr Edsell qualified from Birmingham in 1997. He undertook post-graduate training in anaesthesia at St George’s and sub-speciality training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia in Melbourne and London. He is the anaesthetic lead for the Aortic program. His clinical interests include cerebral monitoring and protection, transoesophageal echocardiography and fast-track recovery following cardiac surgery. He is also active in post-graduate education as clinical supervisor, simulation trainer and coach/mentor.
His research interests include; surgical outcomes, cerebral perfusion, hypoxia and high altitude physiology. Dr Edsell has also has longstanding interest in extreme environment medicine, with 20 years experience in expedition medicine and field research across marine, jungle and mountainous environments. He was part of the neurosciences team on the Caldwell Xtreme Everest Research Expedition in 2007 and research lead for the 2010 Xtreme Alps expedition. He is currently working in collaboration with the University of Birmingham investigating exercise-induced pulmonary oedema at altitude with field research expeditions to Bhutan and Ecuador.
