Research

Our focus is research into aortic conditions. Our work includes studying the causes of aneurysm formation and finding better methods of its diagnosis and treatment, comparing different techniques. We also assess quality of life following surgery and the impact of risks factors on results.

At any one time we have 8 to 10 research fellows. We also have a long-standing collaboration with Professor Manuel Mayer and Professor Qingo Xu at British Heart Foundation Centre of Excellence.
Pouya Youseffi is a senior registrar, research and aortic fellow. He has been awarded several prizes for his research by the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, British Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, American Association of thoracic Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Areas of Research
Some areas of our research include studying the causes of aneurysm formation and finding better methods of its diagnosis and treatment, comparing surgical aortic valve replacement with TAVI. Assessment of quality of life following surgery and the impact of risks factors on results.

Education and Training

We have a well-established clinical and research training programme in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care as well as an undergraduate programme of training for medical students so that they can be introduced to disciplines of cardiothoracic surgery earlier in their career.
We are one of six major training centres for cardiac surgery in London. Our registrars in addition to their clinical work, make significant contribution to our research projects.
